How to Move a Radiator

Renovating or remodeling an older home often requires you to move a radiator out of the way of your project. It is difficult to work around these large, heavy heat sources when doing tasks such as painting or changing fixtures. In addition, it is often necessary to move radiators to a new location when moving walls or adding on rooms. Not only are radiators heavy, but they also have attachment mechanisms that must be disconnected gently and precisely to prevent future problems. However, this cumbersome job is worth it because radiators add character and authenticity to older houses. Before you take on this task, it is important to learn how to move a radiator properly so you do not damage it or yourself.
1
Determine what type of radiator you have, and how many pipes it has.
  • Steam radiators are older than hot water radiators, have different connectors, and often are heavier and harder to move. Radiators with multiple pipes are also harder to move, and harder to put in a new location.
2
Gather the necessary tools, including screwdrivers, bolt removers, a moving dolly or cart and at least two pipe wrenches.
3
Drain any water that is in your radiator to make it easier to move.
  • Do this by opening the bleeding valves on the radiator and the boiler drain which is usually found in the basement of the house. Make sure you have an area to drain the water, or attach a hose and route it to an area where you can let the water run.
4
Detach the union connection on your radiator by using two pipe wrenches.Hold one wrench tightly while holding back on the other.
5
Enlist the help of others to move the radiator gently onto the moving dolly or cart.

6
Strap the radiator to the moving dolly or cart so it does not fall off, and move it.
7
Complete your renovation job.

8
Move your radiator back to its location, or a new location, with help and reconnect it.
